2011 Fantasy Football Week 7 Game Previews & Predictions: Pigskin Across the Pond

One of the most exciting NFL trade deadlines in recent years could add to the intrigue in fantasy football this week. Unlike baseball, the NFL deadline usually passes with barely a peep, but not this year.

Carson Palmer not only got traded to Oakland, it looks like he will be inserted in the starting line-up right away so we will get to see how 10 months away from the game treated him.

Brandon Lloyd will get plenty of targets in St. Louis, but that's a bad offense right now and I still don't expect much out of Derrick Mason in his second week with the Texans.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the biggest fantasy performer out of the trade deadline is Ronnie Brown, who could be a nice fit in Detroit’s offense if Jahvid Best is out for a while.

There are some big names on a bye with New England and Philadelphia both off along with San Francisco, Buffalo, Cincinnati, and the New York Giants. This is the week you hope you're playing the guy with Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy, or Frank Gore because those are five of the toughest guys to replace this season.

Here’s a look at this week’s games:

San Diego at New York Jets: Beware of Vincent Jackson this week as he is coming off an injury and likely headed to Revis Island, so this could be a week to play Malcolm Floyd on the other side if he is healthy. Philip Rivers will have a down week and the running back situation in San Diego is again tough to predict because both Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert are banged up, but Mathews should be fine to play. Mark Sanchez has been a sneaky-good fantasy quarterback but not one you want in a 10-team league this week. Dustin Keller is returning to form and Santonio Holmes is a safe play, but you don't want any part of the Jets running game.

Chicago at Tampa Bay: Neither team is too exciting for fantasy purposes and you have to wonder whether the trip to England makes them even more lethargic. The Bears defense should be a good play and I also like Jay Cutler to have a big day. Matt Forte is an obvious play and Devin Hester will be a big waiver-wire pick-up this week but he remains a lottery ticket with a better chance of scoring two points than the 21 he scored last week. It was nice to see Josh Freeman rebound and I see another nice week for him here. Ernest Graham should get a full workload again and he looks like a solid bet to reach double-digits under those circumstances. Maybe even Mike Williams will re-appear in jolly old England.

Washington at Carolina: I don't want any part of the Redskins this week except for Fred Davis. John Beck gets the start at quarterback and he won't be good. Santana Moss is not even a reliable starter with Beck throwing the ball. It looks like Ryan Torain is the guy at running back, but Mike Shanahan could toss Tim Hightower back in there at any moment, so beware. Carolina's defense is a good pick-up if available. Cam Newton and Steve Smith should get back to their early-season form this week and DeAngelo Williams is rewarding those owners who stuck with him.

Atlanta at Detroit: This should be a shootout the whole way with Stafford and Calvin Johnson hooking up for a few more scores and I think this is the breakout week we have been waiting for from Titus Young. Jahvid Best could play, but I don’t think he will get a heavy workload. Maurice Morris becomes playable in deeper leagues and pay attention to media reports out of Detroit over the weekend because if Ronnie Brown looks like he will be in the line-up right away, he’s a sneaky pick-up for this week and beyond. This is the week Roddy White owners will get the No. 1 receiver they thought they drafted and Matt Ryan will go over 20 points.

Seattle at Cleveland: The Monterio Hardesty era is beginning in Cleveland no matter what the Browns say. Even when Peyton Hillis is healthy, I fear he’s going to be in a timeshare with Hardesty so I don’t want to play either of those guys under those circumstances. If Hillis is out, Hardesty is a viable flex option in any league. Greg Little is another good flex player. Seattle’s quarterback situation may not be known until Sunday, but it doesn’t matter because neither Tavaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst is worth much except in deeper leagues this week. Sidney Rice is my pick for the most valuable Seahawk this week after a bye week that allowed him to get healthy and work another week in his new offense.

Denver at Miami: A nice landing spot for Tim Tebow's debut and he will find a way to get at last 20 fantasy points even if the stats aren't particularly impressive. Eric Decker becomes an even better find with Lloyd out of the way and I think Demaryius Thomas is a good guy to stash for second-half success and he could even have a breakout game like he did last year in his debut. Say this about Brandon Marshall, Matt Moore looks for him and Denver is a much softer defense than the Jets so Marshall should have a big day, but that's it for the Dolphins.

Houston at Tennessee: This should be low-scoring, but a big day for your stud running backs, Arian Foster and Chris Johnson. With Matt Schaub banged up and Andre Johnson out again, look for Foster to get at least 25 carries and stop sharing the load with Ben Tate while Johnson should have his best game of the year.

Kansas City at Oakland: Pick up Carson Palmer if you have room, but don't play him yet. The best news about the Palmer trade is that the resurgence of Darrius Hayward-Bay should continue with him rather than decline as it would have with Kyle Boller. That said, I don't expect much from the Oakland receivers this week because I see Palmer handing off a lot to Darren McFadden with Michael Bush as a good play in deeper leagues. Gotta love the Oakland defense this week against the Chiefs. I am believing the Jackie Battle hype in Kansas City, and think he could be a solid RB2 during the second half of the season. Matt Cassel's last game was a fluke, so don't expect another 30-point performance.

Pittsburgh at Arizona: Tough to know what to expect out of either of these teams early in the season. You gotta buy Rashard Mendenhall after last week and this should be a good week for Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Wallace. Beanie Wells is the only Cardinal I count on these days, but Larry Fitzgerald has to come up big soon and this could be the spot.

Green Bay at Minnesota: The Aaron Rodgers run to fantasy MVP continues this week as he will pile up another four touchdown passes and probably to four different receivers. If you’ve got a Packers receiver these days, you feel pretty comfortable playing them each week because Rodgers seems to be splitting up his touchdown passes and there are plenty to go around. It’s the opposite side for Green Bay running backs because neither are trustworthy. Play your Packers defense against Christian Ponder, who will struggle mightily. I don’t see him throwing more than about 10 passes until the game gets out of hand as he will spend most of the first half handing off to Adrian Peterson. Ponder did seem to look for Percy Harvin late against the Bears, so maybe another glimmer of hope that Harvin becomes relevant this year.

St. Louis at Dallas: Play all the Cowboys, offense and defense. Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, pick up Demarco Murray and get him in the lineup. Play ’em all. Then sit your Rams, almost all of them except for Steven Jackson.

Indianapolis at New Orleans: What I said about the Cowboys above, do the same for the Saints. Play ’em all, at least in the passing game. Drew Brees will go big and should have plenty of throws to make Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston, Lance Moore, and Robert Meachem (all viable with Meachem only in deeper leagues). Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram should also get a touchdown apiece and enough yards to get double digits in fantasy. Sounds like Josephy Addai will be back so you can stop worrying about picking up Delone Carter or Donald Brown, but I don’t like Addai here coming off injury in a likely blowout loss. Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, and Pierre Garcon should compile numbers in a big loss.

Baltimore at Jacksonville: This is one of the weeks you’re happy you took the Ravens defense because it should feast on the Jags. Maurice Jones-Drew again the only Jaguar you are playing. Ray Rice stars here and Joe Flacco should have a good game and I’m also making a gut call that Torrey Smith returns to relevance on Monday night.
