2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix 9/14: Phil Hughes wins 15th, keeps Yanks on top

It’s still baseball season?
What?

It's a rare year when each of my fantasy baseball teams are mostly out of contention in September so I have moved to football, but I realize these last couple weeks of the baseball season are still important to some.

From what I remember of past year's when I contended, the key down the stretch is for your studs to be studs and to get a couple unexpected performances as well.

Jered Weaver was certainly a stud last night, throwing seven scoreless with nine strikeouts and Phil Hughes was a bit of a surprise stud, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Lance Lynn came through as well, giving up one run in six innings while getting the victory and Jeremy Hellickson tossed five scoreless.

Felix Hernandez was just the opposite, giving up seven earned runs in four innings.

A few hitters who spent some time in the minors this year gave their fantasy teams a lift.
Houston's new third baseman Matt Dominguez hit his fourth homer since being recalled and had three RBIs. Adam Lind had two hits including his 10th homer for Toronto while Jeff Mathis, struggling near the Mendoza Line, had four hits.
Clevelan's Matt LaPorta, a former top prospect, hit his first homer of the year among his three hits.

Carlos Santana of Cleveland has been disappointing this year, but had three hits. Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe continued to be one of this year's surprising fantasy stars with his 21st homer.

A couple stud pitchers face off tonight in a big match-up when Tampa throws David Price against C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees.

For those of you in daily leagues, target hitters against unproven pitchers who are getting a look in September. Pittsburgh and Detroit are great examples of that tonight.

If you want to get more info on some of the young guys recently recalled, check out minorleaguebaseball.com to check out all their statistics.

And for those of you like me who have moved onto football, last night was probably a rough one for you unless you were playing Mason Crosby or the Packers defense.

Except for Cedric Benson, anyone you were playing in the Packers/Bears game was a disappointment.
