2012 Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix 9/21: Focusing on Close Categories

Picture

With less than two weeks of games remaining in the baseball season, there is not a lot of advice left to give.  You are playing your studs, of course, so there is no reason here for me to replay the big nights from Pablo Sandoval and Aramis Ramirez last night.
However, there remain a few strategic moves you can make to move up a few points during the final 10 days or so of the season.

The first one is look for categories that you are close in, and stock up on one-category wonders if necessary to try and move up.

If you need steals, go get Juan Pierre, who may be available and had five hits last night to boost your average too. Starling Marte, Carlos Gomez, Jordan Schafer, Ben Revere, Jarrod Dyson, and Rich Thompson could all be available to get you some late-season speed.

If you need a power push, Clint Barmes is the kind of guy to pick up and play at shortstop because while his average may hurt, a couple homers will make up for it. Jesus Guzman, Wellington Castillo, Seth Smith, and Trevor Plouffe are all guys that homered last night and could make the difference in a home-run category.

Josh Donaldson needs to be owned for the final few weeks after getting three hits and a stolen base last night. Marco Scutaro is on a hot streak now, so get him, and Yasmani Grandal too for some power and average. Domonic Brown is another name to look for on the waiver wire along with Casey Kotchman, who had three hits and two RBIs last night.

Continue to check the waiver wire until the end and load up on categories that you still need.

The other thing you can still do is stream starting pitchers. Jason Berken, Tyler Cloyd, and Jeremy Guthrie are all guys that were probably available yestrday and would have given you a big boost in pitching categories.

Today, Chris Carpenter returns and if he is available, take a risk and grab him. Jacob Turner, Casey Kelly, and Drew Pomeranz are all guys I'd grab for a start tonight along with Luis Mendoza.

When the season winds down and many owners in your league have stopped paying attention or focused on football, you can take advantage by adding players down the stretch to try and pick off some points.

If you want some in-depth baseball research, today is Free Friday at www.baseballprospectus.com and everything on the website is free.

In daily fantasy leagues, I love the Yankees lefties, Cano and Granderson, against Jarrod Parker and Oakland tonight.
