2012 Fantasy Baseball, Week 14 Rookie Report: Take a Flier on Fiers

This week we look at two rising stars out in San Diego and we see why there are no "fiers" out in Brew Crew land. Stay tuned next week as we look at my top rookies by position for the first half of the 2012 season.
SP-MARTIN PEREZ (TEXAS)- The Rangers 21 year old lefty got the call last week to the majors and did not disappoint. In his first major league start he allowed only two runs in 5 1/3 innings as he got the win over the A's. Perez is one of the Ranger's top prospects although his minor league stats are not overwhelming, showing a 25-29 record with a 4.29 ERA in 98 games. For now Martin is a watch and see candidate especially in Texas where he will be backed with top notch offense. Once the Texas starters get healthy again he will most likely be moved back down to the AAA level.
SP/RP- MICHAEL FIERS (MILWAUKEE)- Fiers currently owns a 3-2 record with a 2.28 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Even more impressive is that he has 41 K's and only eight walks in 39 innings. He has not given up a run in his last 18 2/3 innings as well. In 2011 at Nashville in AAA Michael had a 8-0 record, 1.11 ERA and averaged over a strike out per inning so the potential is there. If you need help in the pitching categories he is a must pick up. Definitely plenty of upside here.
SP- LANCE LYNN (ST.LOUIS)- Lynn has hit a wall since his stellar first 2 1/2 months of the season. In his last three starts he has failed to get past the sixth inning and has allowed 17 runs in 15 2/3 innings of work. For the season Lance still has a 10-4 record and a 3.61 ERA. I am not sure how high his stock is now after the three bad starts but the time is now to unload and get the best you can for him.
C- YASMANI GRANDAL (SAN DIEGO)- Grandal made history on June 30th in his first major league start as he became the first player in history whose first two career hits were home runs from two different sides of the plate. Yasmani was one of the key pieces in the Matt Latos trade with the Red's last year and is a breath of fresh air considering the weakness at the catching position this year. His two year minor leage stats project over a full season at .314 with 20 HR's and 104 RBI's. This guy is a huge sleeper and looks like he will get regular AB's with the Padres.
2B- ALEXI AMARISTA (SAN DIEGO)- Alexi has been on a tear in his last five games going 9 for 16 with four HR's and 11 RBI's. While I do not expect the power surge to continue I think the average and SB's will stay at a decent level and he may be able to help you in those categories. His minor league numbers show a career .311 BA with plenty of stolen bases to add. For now he is receiving plenty of playing time and the Padres will make every attempt to let their youngsters get seasoned at the major league level. Keep an eye on him.
