2012 Fantasy Football, Week 15 Target Practice: Aaron Hernandez Gets All The Looks

Aaron Hernandez

Welcome to week 15's “Target Practice,” where we investigate the outliers in the past week’s targets and what they could potentially mean going forward.

He was targeted how many times?

Brandon Lloyd (WR | New England Patriots | 16 targets) Finally, Brandon Lloyd comes through with a maximum effort in week 15, snagging 10 passes for 190 yards on 16 targets from Tom Brady. But, where has he been all season? Likely on your fantasy team’s bench or waiver wire — cemented as the year’s biggest bust among pass catchers. However, the Patriots face an average Jaguars pass defense in week 16, so the Brandon Lloyd we’ve expected to see all season could once again show his face during Championship Week. Are you willing to roll the dice?

Michael Crabtree (WR | San Francisco 49ers | 12 targets) In the same shootout as the aforementioned Lloyd, Crabtree hauled in seven passes on 12 targets for 107 yards and two scores. The former Red Raider has three straight games with ten or more targets, but looks to be a tricky play in week 16 against the league’s stingiest pass defense — Seattle.

Stevie Johnson (WR | Buffalo Bills | 12 targets) Johnson was thrown to 12 times on Sunday, converting eight for receptions, yielding 115 yards and one trip to pay dirt. This was the sixth time in twenty-twelve that Johnson received double-digit looks and next week could be the seventh. In week 16, the Bills face-off against their division rival Dolphins, who surrender just over 35 fantasy points per week to opposing pass catchers. Johnson makes for a low-end WR2 or possible flex play for Championship Week.

Aaron Hernandez (TE | New England Patriots | 19 targets) Hernandez led all pass catchers, not just tight ends, in targets through Sunday’s week 15 games. And this is a “fun fact” more than a fair comparison, but he earned more looks this week than the entire Giants’ receiving corps (Hixon -6, Nicks – 7, Cruz – 5) combined. Hernandez will be my number one ranked tight end option for Championship week, so if you’ve got him, you’re in good shape.

Wait, did I read that right? That’s all?

Torrey Smith (WR | Baltimore Ravens | three targets) Smith caught just one pass for 14 yards on three targets Sunday. Not exactly the deep threat output you were hoping for from the speedster. For your sakes, I hope he was on your bench.

Roddy White (WR | IAtlanta Falcons | four targets) White was questionable for action Sunday due to a knee injury, and as far as fantasy football owners are concerned, he may as well have been out. Roddy reeled in just two passes on four targets for a whopping 16 yards. Barf.

Victor Cruz (WR | New York Giants | five targets) No salsa for you this week, Mr. Cruz. Eli Manning looked Cruz’s way five times, leading to just three receptions for 15 yards. On a positive note, Victor Cruz dedicated this game to one of the victims of this past week’s tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. He may have not helped your fantasy team — or his own team — but in life, his effort to honor this young man carries much more weight. Good on you, Mr. Cruz.

Martellus Bennett (TE | New York Giants | two targets) Bennett caught just one pass for 15 yards on three targets. This is more evidence of how the Falcons kept the Giants in check in all aspects of the game. I’d be looking for other options at the tight end position for week 16 — if you’ve made it there.
