2012 Fantasy Football, Week 9 Injury Report: Ankle Injuries To Nelson, McFadden

Picture

Darren McFadden

Jordy Nelson (WR | Green Bay Packers 99% in Y!) – Nelson is back on this list for the second week in a row as he injured his ankle in the first half and did not return.  Nelson was a surprise active this week after missing practices for the last two weeks with an injured hamstring.

Fantasy Spin: The impact of Nelson’s injury will likely be minimal as the Packers are on a bye for Week 10. However, this is now two nagging injuries in the space of a few weeks. Those injuries could take their toll as the season progresses. If Nelson is out beyond the bye week, James Jones will continue to be valuable. Randall Cobb has shown himself to be a Percy Harvin-esque player and will likely have value irrespective of the other players on the field. He’s a keeper.

Darren McFadden (RB | Oakland Raiders 99% in Y!) – McFadden injured his ankle in the first half of the Raiders game against the Buccaneers and was initially listed as doubtful to return. He did not return and was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain. He was called week to week.

Fantasy Spin: High ankle sprains are notoriously difficult to recover from with a return to the field anywhere from two to six weeks. This could be a blessing in disguise for owners who continually feel forced to trot McFadden out weekly. McFadden’s backup Mike Goodson also went down with an ankle sprain in the game. The Raiders turned to Marcel Reese in their attempted comeback. Reese should be viable in PPR leagues for as long as McFadden is out. Taiwan Jones will likely take over the tailback spot and should be owned in all leagues. Jones didn’t see the field in the game versus the Bucs as the Raiders trailed and were attempting to pass their way back into the game.

Jamaal Charles (RB | Kansas City 99% in Y!) – Charles left Thursday night’s game with a head or neck injury after a big hit by Donald Butler. He did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Charles stated after the game that he did not have a concussion and he could have gone back into the game. It looks like Charles dodged a bullet and should be ready for Week 10. The Chiefs are a mess on offense and Charles has been hurt by poor QB play and unclear playing calling. I think Charles will settle in as an RB2 for the remainder of the season. Should Charles miss time, Petyon Hillis and Shaun Draughn would likely share the backfield rendering both only deep league plays.

Antonio Brown (WR | Pittsburgh Steelers 94% in Y!) – Brown left in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. After the game he said he had a high-ankle sprain. Reports later stated he did not and would be on the field against Kansas City next week.

Fantasy Spin: Brown has been a dud when compared to the lofty expectations put forth for him in the preseason. This injury cannot help him to pull out of his flat spin of a season.  Jerricho Cotchery is Brown’s backup, but I wouldn’t look to pick him up in any leagues. He’s past his prime (and he didn’t have much of a prime to begin with). Emmanuel Sanders will likely seen an uptick in targets should Brown be out for a longer period of time and could be useful in deeper PPR leagues.

Dez Bryant (WR | Dallas Cowboys 95% in Y!) – Bryant hurt his hip during practice leading up to Sunday’s game. He was active, but was nearly invisible in the Sunday night matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Spin: Bryant has been quite the volatile performer in fantasy circles and I’m biased to keep those types of players off my roster. If Bryant is out for a longer period of time, Kevin Ogletree would step into the lineup. Ogletree does not have Bryant’s explosiveness, but could be counted on as a WR3/flex option.

Tony Romo (QB | Dallas Cowboys 89% in Y!) – Romo strained his back late in the Cowboys loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.

Fantasy Spin: Romo said it wasn’t a significant injury so monitor the injury reports out of  the Cowboys and see if Romo misses any practice time during the week.  Kyle Orton is the backup in Dallas and would likely only be useful in 2 QB leagues.

Darren Sproles (RB | New Orleans Saints 89% in Y!) – Sproles broke his hand during the week at practice and did not play in Week 9. He is said to be out anywhere from two to six weeks depending on which story you believe.

Fantasy Spin: Sproles’ injury is a big blow to the Saints and fantasy owners alike (especially in PPR and return yardage leagues) broken hand. Pierre Thomas will likely see an uptick in time and perhaps we’ll have a Mark Ingram sighting as a result of this injury. The more interesting player to me is Travaris Cadet who played extremely well in the preseason as a Sproles-light. I’d grab Cadet in PPR leagues and see how he is used on Monday night. He’s almost a must add in return leagues as he’s slated to take over Sproles’ return duties.

Martellus Bennett (TE | New York Giants 75% in Y!) – Bennett did not miss any time in the New York Giants’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he was seen limping around the locker room after the game.

Fantasy Spin: Bennett has been solid if unspectacular this season for the Giants. There is no clear backup on the Giants roster (neither Bear Pascoe nor Travis Beckum is fantasy-worthy) so owners would need to look elsewhere should Bennett miss time.

Santana Moss (WR | Washington Redskins 63% in Y!) – Moss left Washington’s game with a possible concussion. He did not return.

Fantasy Spin: The Redskins are reeling heading into their bye week. Moss is no longer a dynamic playmaker though he still shows flashes. Moss will likely be back after the bye, but the Washington WR situation is a fantasy quagmire and should be avoided in all, but the deepest of leagues. Josh Morgan looked good this week, but the offense is tailored to Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris leaving the WRs looking for leftovers at the fantasy dinner table.

Pierre Garcon (WR | Washington Redskins 49% in Y!)– Garcon missed Week 9 with his long-term foot injury.
Fantasy Spin: Garcon sure looked great in Week 1, but he is dangerously close to being shut down for the rest of the season. I think he can be safely dropped in all leagues. If his injury does not respond during the bye, he will indeed be shut down for the year.

Kendall Wright (WR | Tennesee Titans 42% in Y!) – Wright hurt his elbow in the third quarter of the Titans blowout loss to the Chicago Bears. He did not return to the game.

Fantasy Spin: Wright may have stayed on the sidelines because of the score, but it seems like this injury may be more serious. Wright is scheduled for an MRI on Monday to look for damage. Wright has been solid in his rookie season and has a good matchup next week against the Miami Dolphins. If Wright misses this game, then we could see more time for Damian Williams who should be left on the waiver wire in all leagues.

Donnie Avery (WR | Indianapolis Colts 14% in Y!) – Donnie Avery had 108 yards on six catchers prior to leaving in the third quarter with a hip injury. He did not return to the game.

Fantasy Spin: Hip injuries can lead to multiple weeks missed so it will be important to monitor the Monday injury reports out of Indianapolis. Even if Avery plays next week, the injury could sap some of Avery’s speed and elusiveness. Rookie T.Y. Hilton picked up the slack in Avery’s absence and is a good pickup should Avery missed time. TE Dwayne Allen also had more chances in the offense and that was related to Avery’s absence as well as the absence of fellow TE Coby Fleener. Allen is a great bye week option at TE while Fleener is out.

Mike Goodson (RB | Oakland Raiders 10% in Y!) – Goodson injured his ankle and did not return. The full extent of his injury is unknown yet.

Fantasy Spin: The Raiders backfield was decimated by injury, yet it isn’t surprising given the injury history of McFadden and Goodson. If Goodson’s injury is minor, he could take the lead role in the backfield. However, since he did not return, I can see Goodson out for multiple weeks. Monitor the news on Monday and Tuesday and grab Goodson if it looks like he’ll be healthy.

Chris Rainey (RB | Pittsburgh Steelers 2% in Y!) – Rainey left the game after injuring his ribs. Rainey did not return.

Fantasy Spin: Rainey has been on fantasy radars because of all of the injuries in the Pittsburgh Steelers backfield. He’s nothing more than a change of pace/third-down back in my mind, though he does hold value in return leagues. Should he be out long term, Emmanuel Sanders will take over on kickoffs.

Kealoha Pilares (KR | Carolina Panthers 0% in Y!) – Pilares left the Panthers game with a shoulder injury and did not return.
Fantasy Spin: Pilares is only on the radar in return yardage leagues. However, if he is out it looks like Armanti Edwards will take over and could be useful in those leagues. Neither are big parts of the Panthers’ offense (though one could say it’s not clear who is a big part of the Panthers’ offense outside of Steve Smith).
