2015 Fantasy Football: Week 8 DFS Quarterbacks

Welcome to TheFantasyFix.com’s seventh installment of our DFS quarterback rankings. We will list six quarterbacks here that we think you should start based on their current price on Draftkings. The first tier is for the elite quaterbacks, the high priced big name guys with favorable matchups that everyone will likely be after. The next tier is “value”, where you will find the best value for your buck. The final tier is “contrarian” where you will spend little on your QB with the hope that they will exceed expectations and help you cash out. As always, good luck this week! I hope you all take home big money.

This is the first week this season that I don’t have one of Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, or Aaron Rodgers in this post. This post generally runs every Friday, so Brady’s Thursday night matchup will be long over by the time you read this. Rodgers is going up against the Denver Broncos’ defense, and while I don’t doubt Rodgers ability at all, I just don’t feel comfortable trotting out a QB against that D. Luck has a tough matchup as well, going up against a great Carolina Panthers’ defense. For this week, I’d rather lay off the high priced options myself and focus more on the middle-of-the-pack QBs.

Tier 1 – Elite

Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons, $7,100 – Ryan hasn’t been as dominant as many thought he would be this year, though he has still been a solid option at the quarterback position. After coming off a week in which both Ryan and the Falcons struggled against the Tennessee Titans, the team gets a favorable matchup at home against the division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Ryan’s last two games against the Bucs at home, he has thrown for three touchdowns in each game with over 260 yards. The Buccaneers’ defense has allowed the fourth most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season, which Ryan will certainly look to take advantage of. With Julio Jones fully healthy now, look for Ryan and the Falcons to have a huge game here against the Bucs.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers, $6,800 – Cam has been magnificent this year, and expect to see the same this Monday night at home against the Indianapolis Colts. While Cam doesn’t have many weapons at his disposal, he should still be able to take advantage of a terrible Colts’ defense. Coming into this week, the Colts have allowed an average of 286 passing yards against opposing QBs to go along with 12 passing touchdowns. Greg Olsen has been Newton’s main target this season, and the Colts have allowed at least 85 yards and a touchdown to tight ends over the past couple of weeks, making for an interesting stack option. Let’s not forget that Cam holds a lot of his value in his legs, while the Colts’ defense has allowed over 120 yards per game to opposing running backs. Cam isn’t a running back, obviously, but he can always rely on his legs if he doesn’t see something that he likes downfield. I expect big things for Newton and the Panthers Monday night against the Colts.

Other options: Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer

Tier 2 – Value

Phillip Rivers, San Diego Chargers, $6,600 – Rivers heads into the week with arguably the best matchup of any QB, as he faces the Baltimore Ravens and their abysmal pass defense. The Ravens’ defense has allowed the second most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, while allowing 13 passing touchdowns over its last six games. Baltimore is tougher against the run than they are against the pass, so there will plenty of opportunities for Rivers to air it out in this one. Plus, San Diego has one of the worst run games in all of football, so there is little to no reason to believe that Rivers won’t have a huge game. Rivers is second in fantasy scoring amongst quarterbacks, which makes his price tag even that much more appealing. This is easily my “must start” quarterback of the week, as I will be rolling with him in most of my lineups.

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints, $6,700 – There is no question that Brees doesn’t have the weapons that he once had in New Orleans, but a matchup against a terrible New York Giants’ secondary is enough to make him a play for this weekend. The Giants’ defense has given up the second most passing yards this season (2,018), falling right behind the San Francisco 49ers in that category. The defense looked better last weekend for the G-Men (I was at the game), but it wasn’t enough to convince me that they’ll be able to shutdown Brees. I mean, they still came pretty close to losing to a dead-last Cowboys’ team led by Matt Cassel, but I digress. Brees has historically been much better at home than on the road, so I would feel comfortable rolling with Brees this Sunday.

Other options: Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson

Tier 3 – Contrarian

Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals, $6,000 – I was shocked to see Dalton priced this low, especially given his matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense, which is why you should roll with him if you’re looking to cut costs. Dalton has been averaging 23.3 fantasy points per contest, while the Steelers’ defense has given up nearly 300 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks. With a rested A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert coming off of the bye week, Dalton will have plenty of weapons at his disposal against the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Dalton has a remarkable 14:2 touchdown to interception ratio, making him one of the best QBs thus far in 2015. There is no reason why Dalton should be priced this low, so I would be all over him this weekend. He is one of the few QBs I would be okay with starting over Rivers this week, as Dalton continues to prove to fantasy owners everywhere that he has to be taken seriously as a top QB option.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, New York Jets, $5,200 – This is now the second week in a row that I’ve included Fitzpatrick in this piece, and yes, I am just as shocked as you are about that. Nonetheless, Fitzpatrick has put up solid numbers his past two games (over 20 fantasy points in each), and now goes up against an Oakland Raiders’ defense that has given up the most passing yards per game to opposing QBs this season (303.8). Oakland ranks second in run defense (behind the Jets), and go up against a banged up Chris Ivory, so there should be plenty of offense through the air for New York this weekend. Expect Brandon Marshall and Fitz to have big games for the Jets in this one. Keep this in mind: Fitzpatrick has thrown two touchdowns in five of the Jets’ six games this season. Starting Fitzpatrick this week isn’t going to be a popular pick, and it’s not a very exciting one, but it gives you plenty of flexibility to spend big on other positions.

Other options: Nick Foles
