Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Dodgers make history… not in a good way
The magic is gone in Los Angeles. What an amazing introductory sentence. Because Magic Johnson bought the Dodgers – kind of – earlier this season, then they played over their heads and now they suck like they were supposed to. So the “magic” works on two levels. Feel free to PayPal me all your money at my new email address [email protected]. Seriously though, the Dodgers are screwed. They were shut out again on Wednesday, 3-0, making it the first time in team history being shut out for an entire three game series. The loss also vaulted the Giants into a tie for first in the NL West, after the Dodgers’ 1-8 road trip. To make matters worse Andre Ethier left the game after straining his left oblique and he now figures to hit the DL, perhaps until the end of July. That is one, terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, day. At least the Dodgers’ misfortune made for A+ material for me though.
Speculation abounds, on who the Dodgers will target before the deadline to boost their offense and keep pace in the NL West race. The team needs to tread cautiously at this point. Not to burst any bubbles here, but the Dodgers were not going to win the World Series in 2012. The divorce from Frank McCourt produced good vibes and hope for a brighter future. A panic trade could set back the rebuilding. This is the team that traded Carlos Santana for Casey Blake.
Wednesday produced kind of offensive onslaught that gets your dick hard. If you're the kind of dude that gets going on offensive output that is. It's cool, you can admit it. Seven teams scored 10 or more runs on the day; the Mets led the day with 17, the Angels and Rangers had 13, the White Sox had 12, Pirates and Nationals had 11 and the Red Sox had 10. All in winning efforts. Hitters all around the league had big nights, so I'll just highlight the very best here. David Murphy was 4 for 5 in Texas' win over Detroit, with 2 homers, 5 RBI and 3 runs. The Mets disappointing duo of Daniel Murphy and Ike Davis were like a scuba tank exploding the Shark, Jeff Samardzija, in Chicago; Murphy with 2 HR and 4 RBI and Davis with 1 HR and 4 RBI. Torii Hunter hit one out and crossed the plate 4 times in Baltimore. Adam Dunn continued his terrific bounce back season with a HR and 4 RBI. Big Papi hit a HR to go along with his 3 walks and 4 runs on the day, while on the opposite side of the diamond, Joey Bats hit a homer over the Green Monster and right onto the roof of an SUV in the parking lot across the street. I'd go read the sportsbook review on him today.
The White Sox deserve a separate offensive paragraph, as they had 21 hits off 5 Twins' pitchers, in the 12-5 win. Kevin Youkilis was 3 for 4 on the day with 2 RBI, bringing smiles to the South Side. Let me just say, by the way, that it was awesome how major news networks reported the booing of President Obama's Youkilis joke, when they were clearly saying “Yooooooouk.” I can only hope, somebody in the crowd was saying “booooo-urns” .
Did you draft Chase Utley for your fantasy team? Did you wait his injury out? Good news, he’s back and he hit a HR in his first at bat. He was 3 for 5 on the day with 1 RBI and 1 run, but the Phillies lost to the Pirates, 11-7.
Andy Pettitte, supposedly waffled on much of his testimony in the grand jury trial of Roger Clemens, crippling the goverments case and allowing Clemens to walk. Cosmic justice may have arrived on Wednesday, as Pettitte took a line drive to his shin, ending up with a fractured fibula and a likely 6+ week DL trip. Instant karma indeed. CC Sabathia was also placed on the DL with a groin strain. As of now, the Yankees are expecting Sabathia to only miss two starts. The Yanks did edge out the Indians on Wednesday 5-4, thanks to Robinson Cano’s 18th home run on the season.
Wednesday was also a great day for amazing catches. Darnell McDonald robbed a home run, Hector Sanchez flashed cat-like reflexes, Andrew McCutchen showed his range and everyone’s favorite, Mike Trout, pulled off an awe inspiring, catch at the wall. Got to love how Trout did the NBA/Mark Wahlberg in “Fear” chest-fist-smack afterwards.
Link of the day:
Check out this modernman.com article on best postgame bars around NL West stadiums. A great reference for anyone making a pilgrimage to a new ballpark and looking to heighten the pre or postgame experience. I can also personally attest to both Bub’s and Tivoli’s as good Petco Park choices.
Matchup of the day:
Give Pedro Alvarez a shot (still available in 49% of ESPN leagues), facing Kyle Kendrick in Philadelphia tomorrow. Alvarez has the 4th highest wRC+ and wOBA over the last 14 days, driven by his 5 homers, which is good for second most over the same time period. Kendrick has a 5.24 ERA on the season with a 4.81 xFIP. Kendrick is also a righty and Alvarez has hit 11 of his 13 2012 HR off righties.
