Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: June 29, 2012: Bumgarner & Felix strut their stuff

If you look close, you may be able to find some help on the waiver wire.

As the All-Star Break approaches, usually the most attractive names on the waiver wire are top prospects who get called up. However, there are some players available in many leagues who are putting up respectable numbers. Beware, these aren't stars, but guys that can fill in if you have a hole due to injuries or ineffectiveness.

The first name is Tyler Colvin, who was 4-for-6 with 5 RBIs and a homer on Thursday, giving him eight home runs and a .309 average for the Rockies. The former Cubs prospects struggled during most of his first two years in the majors, but is likely to find ways to stay in the line-up.

Chris Nelson is another Colorado player finding playing time and producing, as three hits Thursday pushed his average to .275.

Pittsburgh’s Garrett Jones has been on a nice roll and added two hits on Thursday while teammate Casey McGehee is playing everyday at first base and has homered in back-to-back games as he tries to get back to his form from 2009-10.
Wilson Betemit is still out there in some leagues and he hit his 10th homer of the year for the Orioles. Alejandro De Aza had four hits for the White Sox. Brian Bogusevic has seen sporadic playing time and is not worth a pick up despite hitting his sixth homer of the season.

Anaheim got two hits from Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo while across town, Elian Herrera and Juan Rivera continued to contribute to the Dodgers with two hits apiece. Coco Crisp had three hits and his 16th stolen base for Oakland.

As for pitchers, Zach McAllister still is not going deep in games, but he's effective as he gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched, dropping his ERA to 3.82 for Cleveland. Dylan Axelrod of the White Sox gave up two runs in seven innings for one of his best starts this season. Houston's Dallas Keuchel had his third straight start with at least five innings pitched and one earned run. Franklin Morales continued to look good since joining the rotation for the Red Sox with seven scoreless innings.

Also Thursday, Mike Morse continued to get back to the fantasy form his owners expected as he went 2-for-5 with a homer. Ian Kinsler had four hits for Texas.

The much-hyped debut of Trevor Bauer ended after four innings as he allowed five hits and two runs with three strikeouts and three walks. He left with a groin injury so check his status. Andrew Cashner's return to the majors went much better as he threw six no-hit innings before giving up two runs in 6 1/3 with nine strikeouts for the Padres.

The top pitching performance came from Madison Bumgarner, who tossed a one-hitter for the Giants. Felix Hernandez tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

There is a nice pitching match-up tonight as Justin Verlander faces David Price while Cliff Lee continues to seek a win when he faces Josh Johnson and the Marlins.

A sleeper pick in daily fantasy today is Brian LaHair, whose playing time has taken a hit as he has been moved to the outfield to face only righties, but a day game at home against Bud Norris could be the ticket for LaHair to get back to his early-season success.
