Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, July 27, 2012: Starling Marte & Matt Harvey shine in debuts

Picture

It was a good debut for two of the most-anticipated call-ups of the season.

Pittsburgh outfielder Starling Marte led off with a homer in his first big-league at-bat and finished 2-for-4. He’s an obvious add in all fantasy leagues as the Pirates will play him daily.

Matt Harvey of the Mets is another must-add after throwing 5 1/3 innings in his major-league debut. Even more impressive, he struck out 11 and had a double.

Edwin Jackson had another solid start with seven scoreless innings for Washington. A.J. Burnett had another strong outing, giving up two runs in 7 1/3, while Jason Vargas allowed one hit and one run in eight innings for Seattle.

With Ian Desmond on the DL, Steve Lombardozzi is a nice fantasy pick-up and he had three RBIs for the Nats. Mike Morse continued his strong return from injury with two hits and Adam LaRoche also had two hits for the Nats.

Jonathan Lucroy returned from nearly two months off due to injury and had a hit for the Brewers. He couldn't help Yovanni Gallardo, who gave up seven runs in five innings.

Dallas Keuchel gave up five runs in six innings for Houston. It was also a tough night for Justin Verlander, who allowed five runs in seven innings.

Carlos Santana finally showed what fantasy owners expected with two hits, including a homer. Recent Mariners call-up Mike Carp had three hits and two RBIs. Scott Hairston had three hits for the Mets.

St. Louis has a few nice options at third base as David Freese and Matt Carpenter both had three hits.

Edward Encarnacion had two hits, three RBIs, and a homer while two of Toronto's young studs, Travis Snider and Brett Lawrie, had two hits apiece.

From the "Where are they now?" category, Tampa Bay's Sam Fuld, who was a breakout star last year, continued to have a nice run in his return to the bigs with three hits and two RBIs.

For those playing daily fantasy, a Pirates stack has been rare in recent years, but picking up steam this year. Take your Pirates against Jordan Lyles and the Astros on Friday.
