Fantasy Football Gold, Week 8: Panthers’ Gotta Get A Gettis

Picture

David Gettis

David Gettis played football at the Los Angeles-area Dorsey High, a school with a tremendous football pedigree.

Gettis joins notable NFL receivers Keyshawn Johnson, Dennis Northcutt, and Antonio Chatman as Dorsey’s most famous wideout alums.  Beach Boys creator and front man Mike Love, Major League Baseball legend Sparky Anderson, and singer/songwriter Billy Preston also graduated from Dorsey.

In addition to playing wide receiver and free safety, Gettis also ran track.  He captured the 400m California state title his sophomore, junior and senior year.

Gettis played football at Baylor University from 2006 to 2009, where he garnered an All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention his senior year.  He finished his college career with 116 catches, 1555 yards, and four touchdowns.

At the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine, Gettis’ 10’4” broad jump was third-best among receivers.  The Carolina Panthers drafted Gettis in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.  So far, he’s turned out to be the best of the five receivers picked in that round.

Week 7 Line: 8 catches, 125 yards, 2 TDs

Projections:

Gettis’ performance Sunday was a tremendous surprise, especially since the Baylor grad only scored four touchdowns in his four college seasons.

Before Sunday, he totaled ten catches for 119 yards in four NFL games.  While there’s no concrete explanation for his performance, you can’t help but think that Steve Smith’s return to the Panthers passing attack opened up some opportunities for the rookie.  Matt Moore’s return to the starting lineup is also a positive sign for Gettis.

The Panthers face three top-ten passing defenses in the next four weeks: New Orleans, Tampa Bay, and Baltimore.  After that horrid four-game stretch, the Panthers finish the season playing five of the leagues ten worst pass defenses: Cleveland, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta twice.

As of Monday, Gettis was available in 98% of Y! leagues.  In deeper leagues, an investment in him now could pay off later in the season when the Panthers match up against cupcake secondaries.

If you are feeling risky, open up your flex spot for Gettis when he plays an otherwise-tough Baltimore team that rolled out the red carpet for the Bills’ Ryan Fitzpatrick and Lee Evans.
