The Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix: Jason Heyward Dealing with Shoulder Injury & Other News

Picture

Anyone notice that Jason Heyward has been playing like, well… crap? That would be because since spring training, the big-boy phenom has been dealing with a sore right shoulder and numbness in his forearm. Hopefully an MRI will show nothing serious.

Since practically hitting rock bottom in everyone's eyes, Derek Jeter has raised his average from .242 to .283, riding a 7-game hitting streak.

Mariano Rivera recorded his league-leading 13th save. Mo is on pace for 64 saves, which would just squeak by K-Rod’s 62 in 2008 (yes it’s early, but fun to dream). Although the Yanks are on top in the AL East, It’s the actually the Indians who the best record in the AL and all of baseball.

In possibly the best pitching matchup duel you will see this season, Roy Halladay took the loss in a valiant effort against Josh Johnson. Halladay pitched a complete game but gave up a single in the 8th to Chris Coghlan which resulted in the winning run for Florida.

Halladay: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
Johnson: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

Speaking of pitching duels, Tim Lincecum vs Ian Kennedy turned out to be a gem and a half. Both pitchers went 8 strong and only gave up 4 hits. Lincey struckout 9 while Kennedy fanned 8. The Giants scored the only run in the 9th, so neither pitched received the decision.

Rookie Michael PIneda pitched another solid performance, but not enough for the win against the O’s. Of his 7 games so far, 6 have been considered Quality Starts (over 6 innings, 3 ER or less). Pineda now stands with a 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, .221 BAA, and 3.46 BB/K ratio. Not bad I tell you, not bad at all.

After a win on Tuesday, The Angels Joel Pineiro is now 2-0. In the three starts since being activated from the DL, Pineiro has pitched 20.1 innings with a 1.33 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.

Roger Bernadina was 0-3 on Tuesday but managed to steal a base and score two runs. Bernadina can be a decent pickup if you are desperate for stolen bases.

After taking off the whole week due to personal reasons, Jose Bautista returned Sunday and as usual hit a home run. Yesterday, he hit another dinger, giving him 11 on the year and tied for first in the league. So even after missing 6 days, Bautista leads the AL in homers, 2nd in runs, 1st in walks, 2nd in average, 1st in OBP, 1st in SLG and 1st in OPS. Jeez!!

After last week’s no-hitter, Francisco Liriano didn’t exactly follow up his stellar performance with a gem. Liriano pitched 3 innings and gave up 4 runs before being yanked, having trouble breathing.

Chris Carpenter has not been himself this year. Although he got the win Tuesday, he allowed 15 base runners and four earned runs.

With injuries to the Rays rotation, Andy Sonnanstine got the start. Sonnanstine lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits and five walks.

A’s closer Andrew Bailey threw a simulated game on Tuesday and baring any setbacks, should be close to a rehab assignment. In all likelihood Bailey will be activated within the next two weeks.

Andrew McCutchen pulled a Derek Jeter yesterday hitting 2 home runs and probably halting any “buy-low” trades this week.

The Houston Astros still have no idea who their closer is going to be. My guess is that Mark Melancon will be getting his opportunities but for now it’s anyone’s job.

In his first game since April 9th, J.J. Hardy was 4-5 from the dish with a run and an RBI.

Jake Peavy is scheduled to make his first start of the season Wednesday. Philip Humber has pitched well in Peavy’s place (2.97 ERA) and may still have a rotation spot if Gavin Floyd is unable to make his next start.

Homer Bailey twirled seven shutout innings striking out five. Since coming off the DL, Bailey has an ERA and WHIP under one.

Brandon League blew his first save of the season.

Matt Joyce is providing ample protection for Evan Longoria in the Rays lineup.

Today's hot matchup to watch is Cliff Lee @ Ricky Nolasco. Other studs to keep an eye on today are David Price, Felix Hernandez, Tommy Hanson, Matt Garza & Jonathan Sanchez.
